About St John

St. John is the smallest of the US Virgin Islands but it has breathtaking white sand beaches along the north shore. Two thirds of the island is within the Virgin Islands National Park. The Park maintains the north shore beaches, a number of hiking trails, as well as cultural and archaeological sites. St. John is the crown jewel of the U.S. Virgin Islands with a variety of tropical trees, plants and flowers. There is lush sub-tropical forest on the lee side of the island towards the north and west and an area with cacti, century plants and mesquite on the dryer windward side forming two unique ecosystems. Swogjan's Dragon is uniquely situated between the two systems.

About the House

Swogjan’s Dragon, located in the geographic center of St. John, has gorgeous views overlooking Coral Bay to the East and the British Virgin Islands to the East and Northwest that Caribbean Travel Magazine has called “the best view in the Caribbean”. It is a two level three bedroom house, with a large pool set in one and a half acres of tropical forest high on a ridge saddle between two peaks facing the cooling trade winds, which provide nature’s natural air-conditioning and a bug free environment. We have air-conditioners in the 2 upstairs bedrooms for your comfort. The house has 2,300 sq. ft. of indoor living space and as much in outdoor living space for your vacation enjoyment. The grounds are professionally landscaped with a variety of native plants, a front patio, and beautiful stone walls both in and outside. This fully equipped solar powered vacation home offers the very best in complete privacy, comfort, quiet and relaxation. All linens are provided including beach towels. So all you need to bring are casual lightweight clothing, a windbreaker, sweater for cool evenings, sneakers, bathing suit, snorkel gear, suntan lotion and sunglasses. Life on St John is casual, jackets or dresses are not necessary,

but you must be covered up in town or when dining out.

Upper Level

The upper level has two bedrooms and two baths, each of these bedrooms have twin beds that can be made up either separately

or as a king. The main bath also has an outdoor stone shower. All upstairs bedrooms have air-conditioners and ceiling fans. The great/dining room areas have ceiling fans. On the upper level the large airy great room is equipped with cable TV, DVD/VCR, CD player, wireless internet, wet bar and safe. The kitchen is complete with a stove, wall oven, refrigerator, microwave, appliances, dishes, glasses and flatware. There is also a complete laundry facility on this level. An outdoor gas grill, coolers and beach chairs are located just outside the kitchen entry. Both the upper and the lower levels of the house have sliding glass doors that open onto their own private covered porch facing the cooling trade winds and Coral Bay and the BVI.

Upper Level Deck and Pool

On the upper level is the main deck with pool, which overlooks both sides of the island, is an outdoor shower to rinse off the beach sand and salt, and a covered porch with hammock and a hot tub with views of the sky. From the upper deck there are views of the Caribbean, Sir Francis Drake Passage and the British Virgin Islands to the East and the Atlantic and more islands to the Northwest. The pool  is 26'- 4" long x 15'- 0" wide x 4'- 0" to 9'- 0" deep.

Lower Level

The lower level, which can be rented for parties of 5 or more, has one large bedroom with two queens and a twin bed.  There is a private bath and closet on this level, along with a ceiling fan and an air conditioner. Around St John

The driveway, which is located on the upper level, is accessible from the pool area or from the gravel path to the kitchen door. It also has easy access on and off Centerline Road. The house is 15 minutes to Cruz Bay on Centerline Road and is just four minutes from Annaberg, Maho Bay and Francis Bay along the North Shore Road. Coral Bay is 6 minutes away and can be seen from the upper deck. Coral Bay is the fastest growing area on St. John and has its own shops, grocery stores, organic farm and several good restaurants and bars. Although not as large as Cruz Bay it has a friendly small town atmosphere, prices are usually lower and the pace is slower. Cruz Bay, the main town and port of entry, has a large super market, several grocery stores, a bakery, a pharmacy, a good health clinic, and a variety of stores carrying clothing, jewelry, souvenirs and native crafts. There are over a dozen very good restaurants in Cruz Bay and elsewhere across the island as well as nightspots and bars.

There are free public tennis courts, sail boat rentals, scuba diving trips, small craft or kayak rentals and ferries or charter boats to visit the nearby British Virgin Islands. St. Thomas, with golf and its world class duty free shopping centers, is only a short ferry ride away. There is lots to see and do on St. John if you like to swim, snorkel, hike, explore, bird watch or just relax on the beach or at the pool. For more information and details

about St. John see:  www.friendsvinp.org. General information about St John, including restaurants, attractions and activities are located in a black binder in the Great Room.
